Botswana

Botswana is home to The Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta in the world. It covers an area of 15000km² in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. An enormous oasis it is a place where you combine the most exciting fishing on fly with incredible and prolific wild life. A place where you can hop onto a tender boat for a morning fish and spot the big five waking up and walking down to the waters edge for a drink.

The Barbel run takes place between September and November down the Okavango river above the Delta. Although the catfish is not a highly prized specimen to catch on fly, the churning water created by thousands of barbell smashing the baitfish attract schools of hungry tiger fish which become so aggressive they devour anything that moves.  Even the novice fly fisherman will get his fly hook bent by these razor toothed monsters. Bream is another species that is popular especially during the winter months between April to August as well as the variety of lesser targeted species such as the African Pike, bulldogs and parrotfish. Outside of the distinct window of the barbell run that takes place above the delta, you can target tigers, bream and other species in the delta throughout the year.
