Hemingways - Kenya

Location & Facilities

A luxury tropical retreat on one of Kenya's finest beaches' Image
Hemingways is a 74 room resort Hotel overlooking the stunning beach of Watamu Marine Park, 20 miles south of Malindi and 60 miles north of Mombasa. The ambience of the hotel is of relaxed sophistication, with the friendliness of a privately owned hotel coupled to the facilities and standards of an International resort.

Our varied cuisine is highly regarded, with attentive service to match, and our staff are renowned for their courtesy and friendliness.

Our beach was voted by the Sunday Times as being one of the top 10 beaches in the world, there being just 4 hotels on as many miles of coast and guarded by the finest of tropical barrier reefs. 3 miles down the coast from Hemingways is Mida, a tidal lagoon of mangrove creeks teeming with exotic bird-life and the venue for our Sundowner cruises on an Arabic dhow, whilst out to sea there is fishing, dolphin watching, snorkelling and diving. For inland activities we offer a variety of personal safaris with our own experienced guides.

For the more energetic we have a wide range of excursions and facilities, from shopping trips to our in-house gym.

Add the best big-game fishing fleet in Africa with some of the most productive fishing grounds in the world, and you have a truly unique and exceptional destination for your tropical vacation.
Whatever you are looking for in your fantasy holiday, we look forward to making that dream come true, and would be delighted to welcome you to our own little bit of paradise.

Fishing
Hemingways Fishing
Hemingways Resort, at Watamu in Kenya, is one of East Africa's finest Big Game Fishing destinations. Black, blue and striped Marlin, sailfish, broad billed swordfish, salt-water fly-fishing & light-line fishing, we have it all, coupled to luxury hotel accommodation and the finest food.

Why Hemingways?
Hemingways is the ideal venue for your first big-game fishing trips, owing to the diverse nature of the Indian Ocean. The Watamu area boasts a large number of fishing grounds of widely differing nature, all within a short steam of port. These include oceanic tidal rips, shallow bands, and undersea mountains.

It is therefore possible to fish a number of different fishing grounds in one days' fishing, maximising ones chances of success. This abundance and variety of fishing of Watamu is particularly important for the first-time big-game fisherman. On your first few trips, you want to catch plenty of fish, and not have perhaps just several large specimens to show for a whole weeks fishing.

What will I catch ? - When is the fishing season
We fish from July through to mid April. The southeast wind (Kusi) blows from mid March to sometime in November and is cooler than the northeast wind (Kaskazi) which blows the rest of the time. The seas are warmer and calmer during the Kaskazi months. Most fish are passing through and not resident in the area and although we have a rough idea of when/what fish will be around, they don't read the record charts and pop up at times of the year that they should not be here and vice versa. The main Billfish (Sailfish and Marlin) season runs from November to mid/late March but Sailfish and Black Marlin often come inshore in numbers in August (and this month has been fantastic for Black Marlin these last few years).

How to get there

Image
International flights go direct to Nairobi Airport, Kenya. From there, you can either transfer by road or by light aircraft to Malindi. (From Malindi Airport, you would be transferred by road to the resort.)
