Activities

A wide range of activities enable guests to delight in the Mozambique ocean environment off Pemba and our modern Activities Centre, situated at Clube Naval, provides all the water sport equipment you may need.

From our base at Clube Naval, we offer windsurfing, water skiing, wake and knee boarding, as well as sailing (Hobie Cat, Laser or Gypsy Sailing Dinghy) from the nearby marina. We will happily take you by boat to explore the surrounding Quirimba marine life, which includes dolphins all year round and whales from August to November. Image

Pemba's colourful marine life can be explored on snorkelling excursions to stunning tropical reefs nearby, where dolphins, marine turtles and other marine life can be seen. Guided and unguided snorkelling is available, with up-to-date equipment supplied by the Activities Centre. We also provide a range of kayaks for guests to enjoy self-guided kayaking excursions around the Pemba marina or across the bay to Wimbe Beach.

After an activity-filled day, sunset cruises along the stunning Quirimba coast and around Pemba Bay provide the ultimate form of relaxation.
Apart from water sports, guests can enjoy a range of beach activities - such as volleyball, beach tennis and badminton on the beach in front of Clube Naval - as well as day and night tennis on our floodlit tennis courts. On rainy days you can relax around the Club Naval bar with one of the many board games on offer.

For guests wishing to experience a flavour of local Mozambique life, Pemba offers a range of shops, markets, restaurants and nightclubs to explore. Take a fascinating Pemba tour to a local cashew nut factory and the age-old Pemba fishing village which are popular attractions, whilst several wood working factories can also be visited. The southern Mozambique coastline also offers some beautiful beaches for guests wishing to explore further afield.
Diving - Pemba Beach

The northern Mozambican coastline around Pemba boasts an astounding diversity of marine species, with Moray Eels, Stingrays, Barracuda, Kingfish and other pelagic gamefish to be seen whilst diving here in Quirimba tropical waters that hover between 26 and 30 degrees. Dolphins are frequently encountered, and Leatherback, Loggerhead and Green turtles are often seen in the water, whilst humpback whales can be sighted offshore between August and October.

Whether you are a novice or experienced diver, we, at Pemba Beach Hotel and Spa, will help you experience the magic of scuba diving in Mozambique. We offer a range of diving courses, such as Discover Scuba, Open Water and Advanced Open Water. Our experienced diving instructor co-ordinates the diving courses and plans every diving trip, taking care of all the details. We use PADI Instructors and Dive Masters as a minimum standard and do not conduct technical or deep-water dives that warrant a chamber.

We use a 24-foot wooden Estaleiro Naval for our dive excursions, which are powered by two 60hp Yamaha outboards for quick and comfortable travel, and which have a bimini-top for shade during travel. At least 11 dive sites are accessible from Pemba, six of which are situated no more than a 20-minute boat ride away. One of the closest and most spectacular sites is the Gap, located where the continental shelf is 600 metres from the Mozambique shore providing a drop-off of 80-120 metres - a prolific feeding ground for big game fish. Pyro Banks, where huge selections of Coral razor fish can be found, the Playground, a shallow wall dive with overhangs and caves packed with Crayfish, Zebra lionfish, Firefish and Scorpionfish, Willys Reef, Beach Reef, and Ponta Saide with its "valley of a thousand anemones", are all easily accessible from the hotel.

Mozambique Fishing - Pemba Beach hotel and Spa
The Pemba area is popular for the sheer quantity of its year-round game fishing, although peak Sailfish season is between July and December in this part of Mozambique, whilst peak activity for Wahoo occurs from September to April and for Dorado from October to March. Yellowfin Tuna is a main target species in Mozambique, with big shoals moving in and out of the Pemba area all year round. Kingfish are also present all year round and their size and sheer power makes them one of the most sought after quarry of serious fishermen. Marlin fishing is not yet well established at Pemba, although small Marlin are caught in local waters from time to time.

Our main fishing boat, Mandenga, is a Gulf Craft 31" Dolphin Super Deluxe, powered by two 115hp Yamaha outboard motors. This state-of-the-art boat has an extended T-Top to shield our guests from the tropical Mozambique sun. On board, our captain and gillie will present you with tackle, lures and bait and will ensure that you have the best professional guidance, whatever your fishing ability. Our second boat Shooter is a Cobra Cat 480 powered by two Yamaha 70hp motors, which is ideal for two fishermen and a skipper.

Based at Pemba is our specialized fishing boat, Broadbill, a 42-ft catamaran, which comes with state-of-the art equipment, which includes safety gear as well as tackle, terminal tackle, lures and bait. Your captain and his team will provide you with all the professional guidance and comfort you need on fishing charters. One of the world's most renowned fishing destinations is accessible from Pemba, St Lazarus Banks, a sea mountain 20 x 30 km in extent, rises from 2,4 km deep to within six metres of the ocean surface bringing together a fascinating combination of marine life. We offer luxury live-aboard boat trips to St Lazarus Banks on Broadbill from Pemba for the ultimate game fishing extravaganza.
