Chiawa - Zambia

Location & Facilities

Resting peacefully on the banks of the Zambezi River, under a grove of evergreen Mahogany trees, Chiawa Camp holds the prime position in the heart of Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park.

It is at this very spot, where David Livingstone ventured through nearly 150 years previously, where the Cumings Family in 1989 created the very first photo safari operation in the Lower Zambezi National Park and what has since become one of Africa’s most desirable, sought after safari destinations.Image

Constructed mainly of natural materials Chiawa Camp blends in effortlessly with its idyllic surroundings and it is here where guests receive the very best Africa has to offer. A stunning thatched lounge/bar area with upstairs viewing deck provides one of the best views of the Zambezi.

Enjoy Chiawa’s renowned cuisine on our al-fresco dining veranda - naturally vegetarians are catered for; however please give us advance notice of any special culinary requirements.  After dinner, retire to the campfire and enjoy a cocktail or two while taking in the sounds and magic of the African night.

Accommodation & Rates

Chiawa has 9 Superior Safari Tents and these offer Africa’s very finest tented accommodation.
We believe these “tents” set a new standard for Zambia in bush-luxury; however they still retain the rustic and unpretentious feel that Chiawa is so well loved for.
Each is extra large, has amazing views, a King bed, ceiling and table fan, 220v electricity, Egyptian cotton linens, Molton Brown amenities, en-suite bathrooms each with island roll-top bath, his & hers washbasins, and indoor & outdoor showers.
Chiawa’s Superior Safari Tents are an ideal, romantic retreat for Honeymoon couples, for those celebrating special occasions, or for those who simply want to experience Zambia’s finest tented safari accommodation!
Superior Safari Tents I - III all overlook the "dry riverbed" with quartering views of the Zambezi River whereas Superior Safari Tents IV - lX face the Zambezi directly.Image

Activities

An unmatched variety of activities are available at Chiawa Camp, led by an award winning team of Africa-born guides for which Chiawa Camp is world-renowned
Chiawa Camp employs enough guides and maintains a sufficient infrastructure that ensures maximum efficiency and flexibility. This means that guests will enjoy levels of choice & convenience not found elsewhere.

The guides at Chiawa Camp are experienced and qualified to help you get the most from your visit to the Lower Zambezi National Park.

Bush Walks Image
Pioneered in Zambia, bush walks are essentially a "micro-safari". An armed ranger will guide you through the wilderness on foot, interpreting spoor, identifying the various flora and fauna, and highlighting conservation issues. The pace is leisurely and the duration is determined by guests' requirements. Typically, a few hours is sufficient.

River Safaris
One of the great aspects of a visit to Chiawa Camp is the variety of activities offered by virtue of our presence on the Zambezi river. Chiawa Camp is one of the few lodges permitted to conduct waterborne safaris within the National Park, and our custom built, motorized pontoons are ideal to take advantage of this.

Enjoy midday cruises through numerous channels, viewing hippo, buffalo, elephant and prolific bird life.

Canoeing
Although the Zambezi offers many activities, perhaps it is best known for canoeing.

No where else is there such a combination of breathtaking scenery, varied wildlife and such interesting channels to paddle through.
Tranquil yet exciting, these trips through waters such as the Chifungulu Channel are an excellent way to best appreciate the Zambezi.

Fishing
Chiawa Camp is internationally acclaimed as one of the world’s leading fishing destinations. Recommended by authoritative anglers and in publications such as The Best Fly Fishing Trips Money Can Buy and Forbes Traveler, expert guides are on hand to assist you in finding the notorious tigerfish (camp record 10.1kg, average 2kg) which are caught on fly or conventional tackle and other species that abound in the Zambezi River.

The waters of the Zambezi are free from netting and are hence your best bet for lots of big fish. Naturally we enforce a strict catch & release policy. Best months for tigerfish are September - November.

Because of our privileged situation inside the National Park, we are restricted to operating two boats at any one time. Chiawa Camp can therefore only host a maximum of 4-6 fishing clients. Boats used are 6m pontoons. Guide, fuel and tackle are provided, however we recommend serious sport fishermen bring their own gear. Medium-heavy action 20lb spinning or baitcasting rods/reels work best. Wire leader is essential, as are good quality sharp hooks attached to bright, shiny spinners and spoons.

How to get there

International Flights to Lusaka followed by 30min air transfer to the Lower Zambezi - Jeki/Royal Airports (Rates from USD150 per person per way)Image

Jeki is situated inside the National Park and guests are transferred to and from camp via a 80 minute game drive or 1 hour combined drive and boat ride depending on the logistics of the day.
