Situated at the foothills of the Kwazulu-Natal Drakensberg lies Hartford House, situated on South Africa’s most famous Summerhill stud, the largest thoroughbred horse stud in the region. Hartford House was once home to the family of the last Prime Minister of the colony of Natal.

From Hartford, one can easily get to many historical and cultural sites, including battlefields (Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer), bushman cave paintings, Heritage parks, Drakensberg mountains, and the Drakensberg Boys choir, to name a few.

Accommodation & Rates

Renowned for its fifteen individually styled luxury suites and with under-floor heating, heated towel rails and fireplaces. All suites are decorated with a fusion of colour, style and texture and are equipped with a telephone, TV (with M-Net and satellite channels) and a mini-bar.

The Umbulelo and Ezulwini suites have been perfectly placed on a picturesque trout lake, built in adobe and stone, whilst the Lakeside suites offer picture windows opening onto un-interrupted views of the lake and a section of the farm.

Activities

The activities available include:- wildlife excursions, self drive, walking / hiking, horse trails, fishing, photography, birding, mountain biking, tennis. Personalised stud tours of Summerhill.

Fly-fishing
Wildfly offers guided fishing trips and clinics with qualified, experienced guides to a selection of 25 Stillwater’s and 24km’s of scheduled river. Clinic packages are available in Half day (4 hours) and full day (8 hours) clinics. Guiding and Clinic fees are charged per person.

Half day Clinic – R495 per Angler. This includes rod fees and guiding fees with an additional manual explaining all the theory of fly-fishing.

Full day Clinic – R885 per Angler. This option goes into more detail about the theory of fly-fishing and includes a light finger lunch.

Fly-fishing Clinics and Guided Adventures can be tailor made to suite your party or clients needs.

How to get there

Whether approaching from the Johannesburg or Durban directions...
Follow the N3 highway to Mooi River. Take the first Mooi River off-ramp from the N3. Follow the Giant’s Castle / Hartford House / Summerhill Stud signs through the village to the west in the direction of the Drakensberg. Approximately 2kms from the outskirts of the village, turn left onto the Hlatikulu Road. Travel 5km passing both entrances to Summerhill Stud before the right turn to Hartford House. Follow the Hartford House signs for 1,2km until you reach the turn off to the right.
